Only a few more weeks to spring
Once upon a time, a virus like COVID-19 existed only in the minds of science fiction writers. In all my planning, I couldn’t have known that the year with a Full Moon falling on Halloween would bring with it such devastating change.
COVID-19 does not influence Trivium’s plot, but my failure to acknowledge it further qualifies the story as fantasy.
Sadly, my characters’ ability to interact without social-distancing, mask-wearing and the threat of spreading a life-killing virus does not reflect today’s environment. No one in Trivium acknowledges COVID or its dire realities.
While developing the story’s calendar, I used the year 2020 as my model. I thought, how auspicious! With two full moons gracing October, the second (the blue moon) would light the night sky of my Occultist Ball.
Most likely, the officers of NOOF would have cancelled my lovely event and Billie’s red and black dress would remain in her closet.
Luckily, Trivium is a fiction. Its events may coincide with 2020s Moon Phases, but that’s where the similarity ends. Please regard Trivium’s time as present day—albeit Covid-free. Begin Trivium’s clock on the day you read it. Humor me and view my tale as a contemporary fantasy where diseases like COVID flourish only in Petri dishes.
The Blue Moon on October 31, 2020 is a calendrical blue moon. A calendrical blue moon is a full moon that occurs twice in one calendar month.
There are three different types of blue moons: calendrical, seasonal and astrological.
A calendrical blue moon is more likely to occur when a month has thirty-one days. A blue moon would never occur in February simply because February only contains 28 or 29 days which is not enough time to complete a moon cycle of moon phases. Since a calendrical moon relies upon a man-made calendar, it is not considered auspicious .
A seasonal blue moon occurs when there are four instead of three full moons in one season of a year. The third of those four moons is called a blue moon and are traditionally reported in farmer's almanacs.
An astrological blue moon is considered more important than the other two. It occurs when there are two full moons in one solar month, which means the moon is full twice within the period it takes the sun to pass through one zodiac sign. The second of these moons is called the blue moon.
The full moon is thought to be a time of fruition and fulfillment, when project begun during the new moon bears fruit. Energy at a full moon is thought to be at its zenith. An astrological blue moon is then, a full moon amplified. Its energy is dynamic, vibrating into the overflow, making it a good time to bring agency into fruition and add that piece de resistance to an unfinished masterpiece. Using the energy of the blue moon allows those who harvest it to do great things by countering great odds. It connects with not only the current moon cycle, but with efforts made, days, months, years and yes, centuries earlier.
